The project will take place in 2019 in the form of artist residencies at Art house Holland with international emerging and established artists. The artists will participate in a couple workshops in various locations and cultural institutions in the city of Leiden. Why City of Leiden? The City of Leiden is a beautiful city, rich with history and cultural landmark locations. It is a great hub to host inspirational, artistic events with international artists that give a contemporary aspect to the city and its cultural ambitions. By attracting international talent from abroad we want to connect the rich historical character of Leiden to the international art stage. We believe that the contemporary revival of the figurative art in painting, sculpture and other media can find a podium in the historical rich narrative of Leiden; with figures like Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan van Goyen, Jan Steen and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes. Artists in Residence 1606 will make it attractive for international artists to come to Leiden by creating funded residencies at Art House Holland for a period of 5 weeks, in the 2019 edition. During their residency, The Plant in collaboration with local stakeholders, will organize events in Leiden and surroundings to showcase and learn about the art that has been made during the residency, and in workshops in existing cultural locations like Ars Aemula, Leiden’s museums and at events. The stay of the artist and all undertakings will be documented on photo, video and text to ensure quality content that can be used on all media. Bringing International artists to the stage of Leiden. In collaboration with PaintGuide, The Plant curates the artists for the project. Aiming at a diversity of young, emerging and mid-career artists to participate, we want to ensure quality and be able to create buzz among the younger creatives in Leiden and surroundings, because they can be taught by their art heroes. By partnering with, and providing workshops in existing cultural places in Leiden, we want to narrow the gap between the young and old creatives by letting them participate side by side in the events taught by the artists. The creation of media content in combination with the beautiful heritage of the city of Leiden, will have a reinforcing effect, and help all involved parties to gain international attention.City of Leiden Leiden is a cultural city with a historical background that goes back for 1200 years. A lot of that history can be seen today in the beautiful city centre. Multiple museums feature important parts of the story that made Leiden what it is today. Leiden prides itself for its great culture and many museums, like Museum Volkenkunde (a museum about ethnology), Naturalis Biodiversity center (a national museum of natural history and a research center on biodiversity), Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (the national archaeological museum) Rijksmuseum van Oudheden has a close connection to the university of Leiden which was founded by Willem van Oranje in 1575, which makes it the oldest university in the Netherlands. The fact that Leiden is the well known university city it is, can be noticed by the relatively low average age of its inhabitants. In the last decade the city of Leiden is trying to expand its cultural reputation even further. A relatively new concept is “Beelden in Leiden”. A yearly exhibition to give upcoming artists a platform on one of the most beautiful streets of Leiden, the Hooglandse Kerkgracht. Worth to mention is an artists association called Ars Aemula Naturae. This association was founded in 1694 to give artists the opportunity to expand their talent and help spread the knowledge of the visual arts. PaintGuide PaintGuide™ started with one simple goal, to create a forum for creatives from all over the world to share their favourite artists and inspirations with art lovers worldwide. Started in 2014, PaintGuide began sharing images of artworks that were inspirations to its founders. As the account grew, an open invitation was proposed to likeminded peers to take over the Instagram feed, to curate and share a week’s worth of creative influences for their respective fans. PaintGuide carried a visual dialogue on the art world’s continuing momentum into the digital sphere. Since then, PaintGuide have been busy creating a brand new blueprint to evolve and transform its creative arts community, whilst staying true to its original format. Because of this unique concept and our ever evolving passion, over 150+ internationally established artists had previously partaken in these takeovers, and opening their “sketch books” to the world. With over 350K+ followers and generating huge attention worldwide. With a social media reach of 8.2 million views, 15 million unique impressions monthly, PaintGuide has successfully produced collaborative selling exhibitions and queues around the block to view these phenomena, and an overwhelming crowdfunded campaigned PaintGuide book from its community.
